Damn the novel sounds really good. Too bad the about adaptation. Nothing inherently bad about giving an MC room for character development, but this is giving me tonal whiplash. MC has his whole family/village murdered and he responds by becoming a timid, depressive Disney character. Nothing inherently wrong with that or unrealistic, but not exactly the ideal mindset for a cultivator training to kill demons lol. Between that and the attention he wasn't getting from senior sister, it's almost like cultivation (the whole point) is an afterthought to him, in contrast to his brother/friend who is much more invested and passionate.

I'll probably stick until Bi Yao tells her story and then drop it, but I really want to know how they'll ruin one of the best moments in all novels I've read so far. That moment in novel is just sick... so good on so many levels where you can't even decide if you' want to be absolutely aved on something most beautiful or you want to puke because of the nightmarish horror you've read. It is both at the same time, just different viewing perspective on same thing

I think I'll pick up the novel just because I'm curious. I love dark, dystopian, and psychological shiz so it might be right up my alley. My favorite anime is Texhnolyze if that says anything lol. But I feel like I'm getting whipsawed here by a donghua that's mired in self contradiction, or more likely had its original message vitiated by a production studio. We have an MC who had everyone close to him murdered...yet displays little/no real passion in advancing as a cultivator, much less any drive to exact retribution on the fiends who massacred his entire village or to develop the power to protect himself/loved ones. Instead, he seems to take more pleasure ruminating on his perceived weakness and senior sister's infatuation. HALF the time it looks like he's about to cry--It shouldn't be any wonder that he's gotten his ass kicked or had to have it saved by senior sister (until relatively recently).

Then...buckle up, because the OTHER HALF is devoted to comedic banter and Harry Potter, complete with pet monkey, as you accurately described it. WTF? The obvious tonal clash is making me feel like a crash test dummy on rocket, then slamming into a brick wall LOL.

I started reading the novel (a bad English translation) because of some of your comments. I have read tons of these wuxia/xianxia cultivation novels. Most of them suck, but at least I usually go with a halfway decent translation. So far, reading the novel, I have to say that the actual donghua is more interesting, engaging and you can sort of feel some kind of emotion. I understand everyone's criticisms of mc being somewhat "Disney" character, but I see it as less of a dork and more of a quiet psychopath who has not yet become the school killer.

So far, the novel hasn't really got me all that interested. I am currently at Ch. 24 and they are on the 2nd round of the tournament.

A typical recycled theme for every cultivation donghua out there. The MC is weak, gets boosted by some ancient relic in a rock (IYKYK), or a flying fox spirit (Yes I am taking shots at you Wu Dong Qian Kun. That last season was a hot piece of garbage period! change my mind) or a old spirit of once godly character (And no, this is not a dig at BTTH lol. The MC was already a born prodigy so that's a different story). The new series with magic book guy and 4 element dude is much better than this sh!t and even better animation. Fk I'm complaining this in the middle of the series, better go copy paste this at the home page of this stupid thingy.

This animation massacres original donghua story to the point someone would take some nightmarish horror story and then modified it to the point you thought you watch badly scripted animation of "Snow White and 7 dwarves". No animation quality can save this

It is my biggest disappointment this year, lol... by far... and disappointment grows with each episode where I am realizing I'll probably abandon it in few episodes no matter how much of a fan I am to original story

Don't get me wrong. If someone hasn't read the novel, he can't expect things and the animation tone is just that... animation tone with Harry Potter happy go lucky atmosphere. You might as well take it as it is and decide if this normal is good for you or not. I merely commented on "highly anticipated donghua". Who knows... as standalone animation without previous baggage it might even turn great

It is completely different if one read it (novel is dark as hell) and has the expectancy of how things should be presented. And if that someone loved the story, the feeling is even worse. For that very reason I can't have anything but negative impressions. For me it feels like truck would splatter my favorite puppy and like that is not enough... all the birds in 50km range flew over and took shit on his corpse.

Without even reading the novel nor your spoilers, I could tell something was off. Now I just know and have confirmation what that was smh.
